  1. 20.1 The Challenges of Peace • Objectives • 1) Identify demobilization and labor unrest following the war. • 2)Examine the 1948 Election. • 3)Compare the Fair Deal with the New Deal.

  2. Demobilization Problems • War is over, no need for so many soldiers. • Over 9 million service members. • Concern over re-integration in society. • Enough jobs for everyone?

  3. Demobilization Problems • Solution = Govt. Intervention! • G.I. Bill of Rights • Loans for veterans • Money for college • (1944-1956) over 8 million students in college. • (1946) Employment Act passed.

  4. Economic Troubles • Economy shifts back to consumer goods. • Americans spend money they saved during the war. • U.S. Farms increase exports to feed starving Europe/Japan.

  5. Economic Troubles • Veterans given preference in jobs • FEPC abolished. • No more protection for African-Americans in war industries. • Women encouraged to quit. • Why?

  6. Economic Troubles • Wartime Price controls lifted. • Prices soar! Why? • Wartime restrictions on strikes lifted. • Over 5 million strike in 1946. • Taft-Hartley Act • Allowed judges to end some strikes.

  7. The 1948 Election • Things don't look good for Harry Truman. • Labor unhappy with him. • Truman's support for Civil Rights causes split. • African-Americans vs. Southern Democrats

  8. The 1948 Election • Republicans sense chance to win. • Race becomes a four-way election!

  9. He 1948 Election • Truman refuses to quit! • Campaigns across the country. • Truman upsets all poll predictions, wins!

  10. The Fair Deal • Truman advocated an expansion of New Deal programs. • Called it “Fair Deal” • Full employment, • National Healthcare • Affordable housing • More welfare benefits. • Only gets partly passed.
