  1. Warm-Up What areas of your essay are you struggling with right now? Your thesis? Research? Blending quotes? Analysis? The whole thing? What don’t you understand? What do you need help with? Announcements: CBA makeups: today afterschool Book club assignment on my website

  2. Parallel Structure • When making a list in a sentence (like your reasons in your thesis), the list needs to flow. Parallel structure is using the samepattern of words to show that two or more ideas have the same level of importance. Not Parallel:Mary likes hiking, swimming, and to ride a bicycle. Parallel:Mary likes hiking, swimming, and riding a bicycle.

  3. Parallel Structure with Thesis Statements • Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes failed in their relationship because he was older than her, Scientology, and being a celebrity. (notice that each item is a different part of speech – pronoun, proper noun, and helping verb) • Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes’ relationship failed due to their massive age difference, the Church of Scientology, and the pressure of being a celebrity couple. (all nouns)

  4. Introductions • Use this space as a place to introduce your couple. Sample Introduction: Tom Cruise and Kate Holmes were considered one of the biggest Hollywood “it couples” until their headline making divorce rocked the tabloids earlier this year. The news of their separation was not a complete shock, however, because many people felt the relationship was doomed from the start. Cruise and Holmes’ relationship failed due to their massive age difference, the Church of Scientology, and the pressure of being a celebrity couple.

  5. Organizing your body paragraphs • Your thesis should match the order of your paragraphs (age difference, Scientology, pressures of celebrity) • One option is to organize your paragraphs this way… 1st body paragraph – strong reason 2nd body paragraph – weakest reason 3rd body paragraph – strongest reason Which reason do you have the most evidence for? What do you have the most opinion / analysis about?

  6. Organizing your body paragraphs Another option is to organize them chronologically Curt Cobain and Courtney Love failed due to… a.) busy music careers (which lead to…) b.) drug abuse (which lead to…) c.) depression and, ultimately, suicide

  7. Writing a body paragraph Topic Sentence – One of the reasons that Tom and Katie broke up was due to their massive age difference. Evidence (blended with documentation) – Katie and Tom’s “seventeen year age difference” was a significant factor that lead to the collapse of the relationship in June of 2012 (CNN). Analysis – Katie and Tom were in two different stages of life. Priorities and interests change as a person gets older. In addition, there is a lot of judgment from society when a couple that far apart in age gets married. Concluding Sentence – Age was very obviously a factor in this failed romance.

  8. Now it’s your turn! Write a body paragraph for reason number two: the church of Scientology. Use the following research in your paragraph. Be sure to just use a snippet of the quote and document it correctly. You need a topic sentence, blended quote, two analysis sentences, and a concluding sentence. "Scientology’s Role in Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes Divorce." Washington Post. The Washington Post, 07 July 2012. Web. 31 Oct. 2012. Holmes, who converted to Scientology in 2005 before marrying Cruise, reportedly hadn’t been seen inside a Scientology Church for some time. Several years ago, she enrolled Suri [their daughter] in a Catholic preschool. Debra Opri, a high-profile family trial attorney in Los Angeles, speculates that the divorce could have been driven by Holmes not wanting Suri to be lured into Scientology. “Their prenuptial contract might have been conducted in such a way that the child, by a certain age, would have been a full-fledged Scientologist,” she says.

  9. Internal Documentation • If multiple sources start with the same word, go to the next word(s) until it is no longer a match. “Tom and Katie’s Hollywood Ending.” Washington Post. The Washington Post, 07 July 2012. Web. 31 Oct. 2012. (Tom and Katie’s Hollywood) “Tom and Katie’s Messy Break-Up.” Fox News. n.d. Web. 31 Oct. 2012. (Tom and Katie’s Messy) “Tom and Katie Divorcing.” CNN. Cable News Network, n.d. Web. 31 Oct. 2012. <http://www.cnn.com/video/>. (Tom CNN) “Tom and Katie Divorcing” ABCNews.com, n.d. Web. 31 Oct. 2012. (Tom ABCNews)

  10. Conclusion • Restate your thesis in different words. • Think about a reverse funnel. Start with restating your thesis in different words. • Your last statement should be more universal. Start narrow and end broadly (but don’t say “you!”). Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes’ relationship was ultimately a failure due to three main reasons: the massive age difference between the two, the impact that the Church of Scientology had on the relationship, and the pressure of fame. This relationship demonstrates the importance of shared values in a marriage.

  11. When referring to your couple • Presidential couples: President ___ and First Lady ___ • Royal Couples: Prince _____ and Lady ______ • Significant Historical Figures: Dr. King and Mrs. King Look at how your sources refer to your couple. In most cases, when referring to people you don’t know in an essay, you refer to them by their last name. However, in some of these cases (like Bonnie and Clyde, Lucy and Dezi, Elvis and Pricilla, etc.) last names are not needed.

  12. Titles • Do not call it Famous Couples Essay!! • Title should have the name of the couple and some indication of whether they succeeded or failed • Needs to be the same size and font as everything else. (12 pt Times New Roman) No underlining, bolding, italicizing, etc. • Remember: the tone of the title should match your essay Samples (These are off limits!) *Laughing through the Tears: Lucille Ball and DeziArnez *A Modern Day Fairy Tale: Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier *Sex, Drugs, and Rock and Roll: The Tragic Love of Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love *Don’t look Back: The Love and Loss of Orpheus and Eurydice

  13. Reminder!! • Rough Draft is due tomorrow!! It can be handwritten or typed, but I will not print anything for you.
