  2. Background on the Gold Rush • The year of the Gold Rush was- 1849 • This Gold Rush of California is important because it helped California economically and helped the population.

  3. The reason for the Gold Rush. The reason for the Gold Rush of California was people were looking for quick riches so when gold was found in California in 1849 people rushed there.

  4. As the east becomes more crowded, Americans want more land. The west contains furs, lumber and precious metals. Americans accept Manifest Destiny. Native Americans are forced off the land. The United States wars with Mexico The U.S extends from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Cause n’ Effect

  5. People Involved. • Forty-niners- Were the people that came from all over the US to dig for gold. • California's- The new citizens' of California. • Levi Strauss- Made and sold the miners sturdy pants made of denim.

  6. Life in California. • As people rushed to California to look for gold they built new communities called boomtowns almost over night. • As ships arrived daily with gold seekers and adventures San Francisco grew form a tiny village to a city.

  7. Economic Progress • The gold rush ended with in a few years but had lasting effects on California's economy. Agriculture, shipping and trade expanded to meet the miners needs for food and other goods. Many people to come looking for gold stayed in California to farm or run a business.

  8. The Mining Camps • The mining camps had very few women in them, it was mostly populated by men of all races and walks of life's. When the men were not mining they spent there time gambling, drinking and fighting. Mining owns had no police or prisons, so lawbreakers posed a threat to these mining camps.

  9. Interesting Facts • The gold rush brought many people too California making it’s population grow over 200,000 people in less than 4 years. • America made up 80% of the forty-niners. Others came from Mexico, South America, Europe and Australia.

  10. In The End. • After the gold rush was over it still had long lasting effect on California. Agriculture, shipping, and trade expanded. Such rapid growth in the population brought the need for more effective government and California applied for statehood in March 1850 and did not become a state until six months later.
