Atoms and Elements Pd: Fifth Grade Science Standard 3.4.7
The Atom • Smallest particle of an element that has the same chemical properties • Scientists make models of the atom because it can not be seen directly
Models of the Atom Cloud model Orbital model
Parts of the Atom • Protons are in the nucleus of the atom and have a positive charge • Neutrons also in the nucleus are neutral (have no charge) • Electrons travels around the nucleus and has a negative charge
Elements • Substances that can not be broken down by simple means • Can be classified by state of matter • Can be classified as a metal, nonmetal, semimetal, or a noble gas • Organized into the Periodic Table of Elements Chem4Kids.com:Element List.
Periodic Table of Elements All of the elements are classified into this table.
Each box tells the mass of one atom, how many pieces are inside, and where it should be placed on the Periodic Table.
Periodic Table of Elements Elements organized into the same row of the periodic table have the same number of atomic shells.
Shells of the Atom The shell is the distance from the nucleus that the electron spins. Electrons can spin in any direction around the nucleus, as long as they stay in their shell.
Besides having names, shells have specific numbers of electrons in each shell. The first (closest to the nucleus) has 2, the second has 8, and the third has 8 also.
The elements in these groups have the same number of electrons in their outer shell.
Molecules are groups of atoms held together by a bond. Molecules can be formed from elements or compounds.
All elements want to be happy! Atoms want to share or give up electrons so that they can have complete shells. Here sodium has given up its extra electron to flourine which needed one to make its shell complete. This is how elements combine to form COMPOUNDS!
When two or more elements form a molecule it is called a compound. • compounds can be made up of 2 atoms or 100s of atoms • sometimes atoms share electrons and other times they donate them. • chances are that almost everything you see is a compound since there are only a little over 100 elements
Naming Compounds When there are two elements the compound starts with the first element name and then the second element name and how many atoms chemical formula for water
