Cinematic Point of View Today’s Aim: How does cinematic POV influence the audience’s emotional response toward the action or the characters?
Imagine… …you are standing in an amusement park watching a roller coaster climb and then speed down and around a track. What feelings might you have as you watch this?
Now imagine… …you are seated in the first car of the coaster. How would your vision of the action change? What would you see that you wouldn’t have seen as a spectator? What would you feel?
Cinematic POV • How the camera, and therefore the audience, sees the action. • There are two types: • Objective POV • Subjective POV
Objective POV • The audience is an outsider, observing the action. • The audience is left to its own devices to decide which character to sympathize with.
Subjective POV • The audience is an insider, participating in the action. • Because we’re seeing the action through one character’s eyes, we tend to identify and sympathize with him or her.
