  1. Advanced Reading Curriculum, Year 2 7th and 8th Grade Reading Co-Facilitators Deb Paputsakis & Randi Jones PEERS – 2007 Fall

  2. Project Overview • The purpose of this Peers project was to create a curriculum for our 7th and 8th grade advanced reading classes. We wanted to find something challenging for our students, as well as to prepare them for the achievement tests.

  3. How will this project impact student achievement? • Higher test scores • Accelerated learning • Differentiated instruction • Technology integration • Exposure to a myriad of content material

  4. Resources we want to use for this school year • 7th and 8th grade reading textbooks • Internet (Factual information, webquests, scavenger hunts) • Tablet PC programs (Windows Journal, sticky notes, Microsoft Office for tablet pc • Accelerated Reader • Book Adventure • IVDL • Chapter books

  5. Themes • We divided the year into various themes: • Theme 1: Introduction to tablet pc’s, labor day cooking contest, gadgets, garnishes, gizmos, and delectable goodies (warm up activities) • Theme 2: Autobiographies, biographies, and photobiographies • Theme 3: Holiday Stories (A Christmas Carol, Holiday stories from around the world • Theme 4: Folk Tales from other Countries • Theme 5: Greek Mythology and Other Tales from Around the World • Theme 6: Mental Health (Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul and extensions)

  6. AR and/or Book Adventure • We’re going to try AR and/or Book Adventure this year. Last year we didn’t do this. Some of the students expressed an interest. Research is varied as to whether or not this is effective for gifted students.

  7. Web Page • A web page for advanced reading was created. This is a work in progress, and I’m sure things will be added throughout the year. It does provide the framework for instruction.

  8. Syllabus • A syllabus for the course was also created. This syllabus will be passed out to the students during the first week of school.

  9. Text Reading • Hours of reading went into the preparation for this Peers group. (I even listened to the stories on my ipod in route to Antigua!)

  10. Notebook • We created two notebooks for each of us with the needed material in it, ready to begin the new school year!
