Order of Speeches • 1st Affirmative Constructive Speech (4 minutes) • 2nd Negative Cross Examiner (3 minutes) • 1st Negative Constructive Speech (4 minutes) • 1st Affirmative Cross Examiner (3 minutes) • 2nd Affirmative Constructive Speech (4 minutes) • 1st Negative Cross Examiner (2 minutes) • 2nd Negative Constructive Speech (4 minutes) • 2nd Affirmative Cross Examiner (2 minutes)

  3. Order of Speeches (cont.) -----3 minute preparation----- • Negative Rebuttal (up to 3 minutes) • Affirmative Rebuttal (up to 3 minutes) • There will be one minute of prep time before cross examinations, second speeches, and 3 minutes before rebuttals. • Total debate time: 38 minutes

  4. 1st Affirmative • 4 minutes of speech • Establish what debate is about. (i.e. gives proposition/resolution!) • Also defines terms and indicates conceded/waived issues. • This is the ONLY speech that is written and read. • Basically controls the debate based on what arguments are introduced.

  5. 2nd Negative Cross Examiner • Up to 3 minutes of questioning • Addresses issues in affirmative constructive speech • Asks questions in yes or no format, OR • Phrases questions in a way to reduce respondents time. • Creates opportunity for teammate to address points.

  6. 1st Negative Constructive Speech • 4 minutes of speech • Denies affirmative’s stance on the status quo (aka their need for change). • CANNOT read any speech, but may utilize notes. • Incorporates information to support argument of keeping the status quo.

  7. 1st Affirmative Cross Examiner • Up to 3 minutes of questioning • Addresses issues in negative constructive speech. • Attempts to invalidate the negative team’s arguments. • Asks questions in yes or no format, OR • Phrases questions in a way to reduce respondents time.

  8. 2nd Affirmative Constructive Speech • 4 minutes of speech • Defines and simplifies issues presented by 1st Affirmative speech • Speaks from notes • DOES NOT address points made by negative team.

  9. 1st Negative Cross Examiner • Up to 2 minutes of questioning • Addresses issues in affirmative constructive speech. • Attempts to invalidate the affirmative team’s arguments. • Asks questions in yes or no format, OR • Phrases questions in a way to reduce respondents time.

  10. 2nd Negative Constructive Speech • 4 minutes of speech • Defends the present system and outlines reasons to keep the status quo • Speaks from notes – both from preparation and those taken during opposing team’s presentations.

  11. 2nd Affirmative Cross Examiner • Up to 2 minutes of questioning • Addresses issues in negative constructive speech. • Attempts to invalidate the negative team’s arguments. • Asks questions in yes or no format, OR • Phrases questions in a way to reduce respondents time.

  12. Negative Rebuttal • Up to 3 minutes to speak • Summarizes the disadvantages of the affirmative plan. • Summarizes balance between proposed affirmative position and harm which negative contends will occur with the status quo change. • Finishes with conclusion for team.

  13. Affirmative Rebuttal • Up to 3 minutes to speak • Narrows issues, response to negative team’s attacks in summary form. • Highlights key issues, and summarizes affirmative position (aka need for and benefit of change). • Finishes with conclusion for team.
