Painting creatures of legends • The Mishipasoo is the legend of a monster that hides in lakes and capsizes canoes. Before going out on a conoe trip, the Ojibwy would gift presents to the Mishipasoo to appease him. Nobody had ever seen a Mishipasoo. Morrisseau decided to paint him. How would you imagine such a creature ?
Style • Morriseau’s style was completely original. He uses bright colours and strong lines. Often the animals or creatures have other shapes inside them and smaller animals or people inside these shapes almost like an x-ray.

Make your our Morriseau like painting • 1) Begin with yellow paint and sketch a large shape of an animal or spirit form. • 2) draw a number of shapes inside of the figure. • 3) fill the remaining space with smaller shapes untilt he entire area is broken into parts.
Final touches… • 4) paint your figure with bright pure colours such as red, yellow, orange. Pink , blue or green. • 5) paint the background while you are waiting for your figure to dry. Use dark colours to outline the areas of colour on your figure to make them stand out. • 6) sign your name. When NorvalMorriseau signed his name he always signed it with the Ojibway form of his name.
