  1. Project Caribou Managing a Caribou Population

  2. Introduction • Wild life managers attempt to maintain healthy populations of wild animals, while factors – both avoidable and unavoidable – affect the populations.

  3. Everybody shares a responsibility for wildlife management. • There are some legally responsible agencies, but their work requires the thoughtful and informed co-operation of citizens.

  4. How to play • You will be given a herd of caribou to manage over 9 seasons • The carrying capacity of the habitat is 100 animals • The point of the activity is to end up with a viable population after 9 seasons (this means as close to 100 as possible)

  5. Each student has a starting population of 100 caribou and 1 die • For each season there are four sections • Conditions • Reproductions • Conditions • Management 100 X

  6. Your teacher will randomly select a card with instructions on it for each section of the season. • The order will be a condition card, reproduction card, condition card and management card. (each season will follow this same sequence) • Listen carefully to the instructions because they along with the roll of you dice will determine how you population is affected.

  7. Keep track of your caribou populations in the boxes on your sheet of paper • You will be expected to provide a graph and answer questions later
