  2. REMINDERS • Turn in Shrek Homework • Monday: midterm! • Prepare by examining Heroes Epic Journey notes and chart. • You can use any notes, outlines, etc., but you MUST write the actual essay in class. • Also, use the preparation that we will complete right now…

THE HERO’S JOURNEY • Your midterm will be an in-class essay on the similarities and differences of the heroes epic journey as it applies to Shrek and Star Wars. • Instead of 5 body paragraphs, you only need 4: • Introduction paragraph • 1st body paragraph: One major similarity • 2nd body paragraph: One major difference • Last paragraph: Conclusion

THE HERO’S JOURNEY • To prepare: • First, create a thesis statement that • Mentions both movies • Mentions similarities and differences in the hero’s epic journey • Mentions the major similarity and the major difference Example: In hero movies Shrek and Star Wars, the hero’s epic journey has a similar “Atonement” phase, but a very different “Apotheosis” phase. Remember: Where does the thesis statement go???

  6. THE HERO’S JOURNEY • INITIATION • Part I: Road of Trials= a series of tests, tasks, or sufferings that the person must experience to begin the transformation. Often the person fails one or more of these tests.

  7. THE HERO’S JOURNEY • INITIATION • Part II: Meeting with the Goddess= the person experiences a love that is powerful and unconditional. This love does not have to romantic or with the opposite sex.

  8. THE HERO’S JOURNEY • INITIATION • Part III: The Temptation= the hero experiences temptations that may lead him/her to stray from the quest.

  9. THE HERO’S JOURNEY • INITIATION • Part IV: Atonement= the person is confronted by whatever holds the ultimate power in his/her life (sometimes, a father figure who has life and death power). This is the center of the journey.

  10. THE HERO’S JOURNEY • INITIATION • Part V: Apotheosis= a period of rest, peace and fulfillment before the hero begins the return.

  11. THE HERO’S JOURNEY • INITIATION • Part VI: The Ultimate Boon= the achievement of the goal. It is what the person went on the journey to get. All the previous steps serve to prepare the person for this.

  12. THE HERO’S JOURNEY • RETURN • Part I: Refusal of the Return= when all has been achieved, why come back to normal life with its cares and woes?

  13. THE HERO’S JOURNEY • RETURN • Part II: The Magic Flight= Sometimes, the hero must escape with the boon. It can be just as adventurous and dangerous returning from the journey as it was to go.

  14. THE HERO’S JOURNEY • RETURN • Part III: Rescue from Without= The hero may need guides or rescuers to bring them back to everyday life, especially if the person has been wounded or weakened by the experience.

  15. THE HERO’S JOURNEY • RETURN • Part IV: The Crossing of the Return Threshold= The trick in returning is to keep and use the wisdom gained on the quest, and then figure out how to share the wisdom with others (usually a difficult task).

  16. THE HERO’S JOURNEY • RETURN • Part V: Master of the Two Worlds= The person has become comfortable and competent in both the inner and outer worlds.

  17. THE HERO’S JOURNEY • RETURN • Part VI: Freedom to Live= Mastery leads to freedom from the fear of death, or the freedom to live. Sometimes called “living in the moment”.

  18. HERO’S EPIC JOURNEY • While not EVERY story has EVERY element, all hero stories have most elements. • Some elements can be spread out between several movies in a series, but movies in a series can also follow the journey within ONE movie.
