  1. Assignment 5 Descriptive stats and Graphing using Excel 2010

  2. Open Excel 2010 • File • New • Blank worksheet • Create

  3. New worksheet Keep this worksheet open

  4. Go to Word file Copy the data from the Assignment 5 Word file

  5. New worksheet Back to Excel to paste. Click on the first icon – Keep source formatting (K)

  6. Paste …and save the file.

  7. Average Type: =average( In the cell below first column then left click/hold while highlighting (blue box) all the data for the Female column. Finish by closing parenthesis and =average(B4:B11) clicking Enter

  8. Standard Error of the Mean Below the mean cell type: =stdev( Highlight the data and close parenthesis. Type: /sqrt(8) It should look something like this: =stdev(B4:B11)/sqrt(8) Then hit enter.

  9. Extending formula cells Left click and hold to select the mean and SEM cells for the 1st column.

  10. Extending formula cells Click and hold lower left corner and extend over to expand to the next column.

  11. Descriptive stats done! Next let’s make the graph…

  12. Making the bar graph • Insert • Column • 2-D column left box (clustered column)

  13. Excel thinks for itself If Excel does something automatically like this… Click on select data and we’ll correct Excel’s error

  14. Excel thinks for itself Remove any series that Excel auto-made and let’s start from scratch.

  15. Your first bar (not drink-related) Click Add Series name “Female” Delete ={1} from series values and click on the mean for the first column (Females).

  16. Your second bar Click Add again Series name “Males” Delete ={1} from series values and click on the mean for the second column (Males).

  18. Clean up… Right click the vertical axis and select Format axis

  19. Clean up… • Number • Change decimimal places: to zero

  20. Axis labels • Click on graph • Layout • Axis title • Primary vertical axis • Rotated title

  22. Axis labels • Axis title • Primary Horizontal Axis • Title below axis

  23. Axis labels Type ‘Group’ and delete the number 1 above the axis label

  24. Error Bars • Layout • Error bars • More error bar options

  25. Error Bars • Select female • Custom • Specify values • Delete ={1} from each box • Click on the SEM for the first mean in both positive and negative values

  26. Error Bars • Click on 2nd bar and repeat the custom bar selection as performed for the first bar.

  27. Error Bars • Choose the right SEM value for the Male column.

  28. Finished You may play around with the formatting but I want to see correct values represented in the graph
