  2. Unit: Ohio History • Grade Level: 1st grade • Lesson: To educate students on the state of Ohio and the history of its existence.

  3. Objectives • Students will: -Identify origin of Ohio’s name -Use directional words to locate surrounding states -Identify Ohio presidents

  4. Activity #1:Where did Ohio get its name?

  5. Activity #1 • Materials -brown construction paper -markers/crayons/scissors -Indian headdress template -colored feathers -glue

  6. Activity #1 (cont.) • Lesson: -Students will make Iroquois Indian headdresses to help them remember that Ohio was named by the Iroquois, meaning “great river”. -Students will use provided materials to make their unique headdresses and will write ‘Iroquois’ on the front of their headdress to help them distinguish themselves from “other Indian tribes”.

  8. Activity #2 • Materials -Graphic Organizer -Pencil -Paper -Maps -Crayons

  9. Activity #2 (cont.) • Surrounding States: • Pennsylvania • West Virginia • Kentucky • Indiana • Michigan

Activity #2 (cont.) • Lesson -Use maps to locate Ohio and its surrounding states -Once surrounding states are located, students will use graphic organizer to write at least one sentence using a directional word to describe that state’s location. -Students will share with their table and color the provided map.

  12. Activity #3 • Materials -Variety of costumes -One of each invention discussed -Map

  13. Activity #3 (Cont.) • Inventions • Thomas Edison -Light bulb, Phonograph, Motion picture camera • Wright Brothers -airplane • Charles Kettering -automobile self-starter • W.F. Semple -chewing gum • Ohio -first hot dog

  14. Activity #3 (cont.) • Lesson -Students will dress up as one of the ten discussed inventors -Will stand in front of the class and share what they invented and when -Children will take turns until each child has had a turn to be an Ohio inventor.

  16. Activity #4 • Materials -Data folders to record progress -10 true/false statements

Activity #4 (cont.) • Lesson -Students will listen to ten statements about Ohio firsts and decide if they think it is true or false prior to beginning the Ohio lesson. -Record score in data folder -After completion of the Ohio unit, do the same true/false activity. Record and compare results.

  19. Activity #5 • Materials -”The Little Giant Book of American Presidents” -Paper -Markers

  20. Activity #5 (cont.) • Lesson -Read “The Little Giant Book of American Presidents” (only Ohio Presidents) -Discuss how many presidents come from Ohio -Make an Ohio President Fact Book during centers (using book read to class as resource) including at least two facts about each president.
