Hygiene routines during clinical work Information for students and staff at the Faculty of Odontology
A fundamental condition for safe health care is that basic hygiene routines are followed to limit the risks of contamination. This we do in clinical work by:
- wearing shortsleeved work-clothes that should be changed on a daily basis or whenever they have become wet or visibly stained - using a white protective coat over the clinical clothes when you leave the clinic Remember... Work-clothes are used only at the place of work
- by not wearing rings, bracelets or wristwatches. They collect bacteria and prevent good hand- hygiene - having nails that are well trimmed and un- varnished - having long hair tied up Remember: False nails are not to be used. If you wear a headscarf, keep it neatly gathered and change it on a daily basis.
- wearing correct safety-gear (see photo) Visor or safety-goggles Face-mask Protective apron Protective gloves Remember... Never wear the face-mask on or under your chin.
- using hand-disinfectant • before clean and after dirty work • before and after using gloves Use hand-disinfectant even when you don´t have visible dirt Your hands should be dry! Thoroughly massage plenty of hand- disinfectant into your skin Let your hands air-dry!
- washing your hands at the beginning of the work-day and whenever dirt is visible Remember: Before using the hand-disinfectant your hands should be dry
