2. National Geographic Overview • This task gives you the opportunity to consider a UNESCO world heritage site and its current management, and offer suggestions to the solution of any problems that you can find. Because of this, your task should be written with a persuasive voice- it is not just a information report but rather a passionate call to arms for the protection of an integral Australian site. • You will break down your information into three sections: • Section One- Context and Background (200 Words) • Section Two- Stakeholders and Competing Interests (300 Words) • Section Three- Solutions and Reconciliation (500 Words)

Overall Display • When creating your National Geographic article, consider the following graphic methods to display information: • Table • Diagram • Maps • Images • Infographic (you can create these on apps such as Canva) • Also consider the elements of a National Geographic article that you could include in your assessment • Use of Yellow text • Borders • Images • Subheadings Student example from 2018 using infographics, labelling, tabs and splashes of yellow

Section One- 200 Words • Describe the location of your chosen UNESCO site and its main features. • Consider detailing where your site is located in regards to Australia as a whole, and a major capital city. Use a world map, and map of Australia to highlight this location. • Include a brief introduction to your site including its creation, climate, the flora, fauna and a history of indigenous occupation. • In one of two sentences detail how either the landform (eg.a reef) is formed over time. • Include reference to any significant flora or fauna within the site • Websites such as BOM, .org, .gov websites are a good place to find information on this. • Justify the reasons why this site has been classified as a UNESCO World Heritage area. • Briefly summarise the information detailed on the UNESCO site as to why the area has been classified as a site of importance. This information should be presented in paragraph form, with the addition of at least two maps, image and diagram.

Section Two Stakeholders and Competing Interests - 300 Words • Identify the environmental significance of this area and for its Indigenous people. • How has this area been used previously by Indigenous people in terms of environmental/ cultural/ spiritual uses (bush-tucker/ cave paintings/ dreamtime stories) • Research the competing land uses of this area, and identify the major stakeholders in the area. What are their main concerns? • Consider the values below and identify the main stakeholders for each: • Aesthetic (beauty of location/ unique qualities) • Cultural (tours/ Indigenous Rangers/ hunting/ fishing/ art) • Economic uses (tourism/ mining) • Spiritual (sacred places/ women’s and men’s sites/ burial grounds) • Environmental (research/ habitats/ eco-systems)

Section Two Stakeholders and Competing Interests - 300 Words • Explain why there may be a conflict of interests at this site in relation to competing land use priorities. • Choose three to four stakeholders and outline any similar interest and competing interests they may have about this site • Use a graphic organiser such as the one here to display your ideas • Making reference to issues of Sustainability and social justice, evaluate how effectively your UNESCO World Heritage site is currently being managed by organisation and / or governments. • In a paragraph underneath your graphic organiser, consider any positives and negatives in the current management plan. Refer to sustainability and social justice issues if relevant.

11. Stage Three- reconciliation and suggestions500 Words • Propose a management plan for your site in 3 parts: 1. Summarise how we can ensure the sustainability of the environment AND Indigenous culture (150 words). Consider why we need to ensure the continuity of Indigenous culture and sustainable use of land, and one of two ways we can do that. 2. What role might the following stakeholders play - NGOs, governments, businesses, indigenous leaders, local people and tourists (150 words). Consider how one or two of the above stakeholders may be able to support your idea. 3. Suggest the main obstacles to creating a management plan to suit everybody and how might these problems be overcome (200 words) In relation to your ideas, what issues may there be in implementing your idea? How could you overcome that? What stakeholders may help you?
