What is “progressivism?” Late 19th century movement aimed to return control of the government to the people, restore economic opportunities, & correct injustices.
Goals of the Progressives • Protect social welfare • Social Gospel • YMCA • Settlement houses • Florence Kelley:Fought to improve the lives of women & children, especially in regards to employment
Goals of the Progressives • Promote moral improvement • Prohibition – WCTU (Women’s Christian Temperance Union), Anti-Saloon League • Carry A. Nation: Radical prohibitionist • who used vandalism to get her point • across • “A bulldog running along at the feet of Jesus, barking at what He doesn’t like.”
