  1. 2012 Winter Institute Course Offerings

  2. What is the Student Leadership Council? • Our members are dedicated to promoting student involvement on all six Yavapai College campuses. It is our goal to empower students, encouraging them to have a voice in their education and their college experience.

  3. Survey Results • At the start of the semester SLC ran a survey asking several questions. • WEPA, registration, class schedule, course evaluations, course offering, smoking on campus and the Rider Diner

  4. Questions to Ponder • Of the 6 questions that were asked the SLC felt that course offering was the highest importance to tackle first • “If I had the choice of taking classes at Yavapai College I would rather take” • Online Only – 16 of 243 (6.7%) • Mixed – 115 of 243 (47.3%) • Face to Face –101 of 243 (41.6%) • Hybrid –11 of 243 (4.5%)

  5. Quality Initiative Report (See page 5) Delivery Method. Students register for • F2F courses by choice 67% of the time. • OL courses by choice 34% of the time. • OL courses because it fit their schedule 58% of the time. The QIR mirrors the results that SLC found

Follow up survey • Online courses only • Why did you choose to take this class online versus Face to Face • Ease of Schedule 70.4% • I like online better than in person 0.0% • Only offered online 25.9% • All in person classes were full 3.7% • I feel online classes are easier than face to face 0.0%

  8. Follow up survey • Face to Face • Why did you choose to take this class face to face versus online only? • Ease of Schedule 3.5% • I like in person better than online 75% • Only offered in person 7.1% • All online classes were full 3.5% • I feel in person classes are easier than online 39.3%

  10. Summary • The Student Leadership Council feels Yavapai College should conduct additional surveys asking what students prefer regarding course offering • The SLC has obtained several comments from students that felt they were being forced into online classes

  11. Suggestions from students • Faculty Response Time • SLC would like to recommend that the faculty association pass a policy that instructors place parameters of response time within their syllabus. • This includes but is not limited to: • voice mails • e-mails • communication

  12. Suggestions from students cont. • Grading • Upon obtaining our survey information a common issue that was raised pertains to grading. Students feel that work should be returned in a timely manner.

  13. Orientation: • It was brought to the SLC’s attention of a mandatory orientation for online instruction at the student level. However the SLC also feels that faculty should be held to the same standard.
