Why did Greeks originally form City- States? • The ancient Greeks originally formed City-States so that their people would have protection and stability from invasion and economical purposes. • The geography also promoted the creation of City-States in that the mountains and the Islands provided a natural segregation of people. • People of different regions and locations did not have as much contact with one another because of those geographical obstacles

  9. 8. When did people most often enter the city walls? • Most people would only enter the city walls, in ancient Greece, when there was an immediate threat to the people surrounding the fortress.

  13. Types of Government 4 • Monarchy • Tyranny • Oligarchy • Democrasy

  14. Monarchy • In a monarchy the government was ruled by one person (King or monarch) who possesses the title by an ascension of the title from one generation to the next. Citizen pay texts to the King an follow his laws. If not solders would be sent after them. From 2000bce to 1100 bce. This government provides protection; however in 1200 bce the city-states battled against one another and a Monarchy was not in favor.

  15. Tyranny • A tyranny works when an individual takes over a government often by illegal ways. After awhile most tyrants often became known for holding on to power and becoming cruel and abusive. It was mainly former military leaders that became tyrants. Most tyrants only rule for a short period of time be for they got over throned.

  16. Oligarchy • An oligachy is a form of government in which a few leaders rule s, such as aristocrats and wealthy middle class. Citizen in an oligarchy could not vote and citizens had little to say about how the government was run. Between 1100 and 800 bce. And oligachy only rule one city-state (Sparta)

  17. Democracy • In this government, rather than people being told how to act, or being told what to do the male citizens of the city-state voted for officials. The population of the men ran the government, also there was a small executive body of 500 male citizens who were responsible for the day-to-day running of the city-state. Democracy was developed in ancient Greece, in 500 B.C.E.

  18. Democracy • The government is ruled be all male citizens in the City-States. They vote who they want to rule them for a certain amount of years. Different groups did different things. The Assembly was open to 30,000 to 40,000 people but only 5,000 showed up. The rich and the poor went there, met 40 times a year and talked about foreign policy. The council of 500 people talked about the day-to-day running of the state.
