BackgroundWhat Is Section 508? • Section 508 mandates that all electronic and information technology developed, maintained or procured by the Federal government be accessible to people with disabilities. This includes: • Applications and Operating Systems • Web sites, intranets, Web-enabled applications • Telecommunication (voice and data) • Video and Multimedia Products • Self Contained, Closed Products • Desktop and Portable Computers (Workstations)

However, if a private organization is providing e-commerce or electronic and information technology to the government, it must conform to the requirements. • Few exceptions to the regulations • In matters of national security as defined in the Clinger-Cohen Act of 1996.
