  1. Solar Energy Resources Kurt M. Jones Chaffee/Park County Director CESIT-Solar Team Leader

  2. Solar Energy Collectors

  3. Solar Energy Collectors

  4. Solar Energy Team • Deborah Lester – Baca County • Pat McCarty – Garfield County • Jonathan Moore – CHEN • Marvin Reynolds – Pueblo County • Kurt Jones – Chaffee/Park Counties • Dan Fernandez – Delores County • Room for Others!!!

  5. Solar Team Focus • Solar Electric Generation • Home/Business-scale Photovoltaic Systems • Small-Scale Photovoltaic (water pumping, etc). • Solar Heating Systems • Solar Water Heating • Passive Solar • Solar Space Heating

  6. Solar Goals (1st Year) • Team membership • Identification • TRAINING (Become Information Brokers) • Deliverables • Fact Sheets: • Harvesting Energy from the Sun: Solar Photovoltaics • Solar Water Pumping Systems (being written) • Presentations • Annual Forum Update • Supercluster Training (March, 2010, Alamosa?) • Website Update

  7. Tools Currently Available • Website (http://www.ext.colostate.edu/energy/solar.html) • Reference Materials for general information • Online sizing calculators for grid-tied systems • Links for additional information • Upcoming on Website • CSU Extension Fact Sheets • Additional worksheets for solar applications • Solar Team Members and focus areas (who to call for questions) • Other

  8. Additional Tools • Solar Pathfinder • Helps to evaluate a site for solar resource (amount of solar insolation, potential shading, seasonal changes) • Solar Team Members • Available for questions from agents/clients, etc.

  9. Sizing a Grid-Tied PV System • Add up total energy usage for the year • Divide by 365 for daily total • Divide by 5.5 hours of solar insolation per day • Factor in inefficiencies OR • Go to online calculator available at (http://www.ext.colostate.edu/energy/solar.html)

  10. Sizing a Grid-Tied PV System • Example: • A Colorado home had a total of 8002 kWH of energy usage for a year (667 kWH per month) • Online calculator: 4.89 kW system • Estimated cost: $39,089 • Estimated net: $15,391 (after rebates/incentives)

  11. Sticker Shock?? • As with any renewable energy investment, best return on dollars is on demand side of the equation rather than supply side • Becoming energy-efficient is the first step in renewable energy • Solar systems can be expanded upon later, provided initial installation accounts for future expansion

  12. New Members Welcome!! • WIFM – What’s In (it) For Me • Part of a Dynamic Team • Professional Development Opportunities • State-wide (nation-wide?) Impact • Publication Potential (Fact Sheets, activity sheets, news articles) • Future Presentations • Happy Hour!! – Wednesday evening, Wild Boar Restaurant, 5:00 PM

  13. Questions?? • Resource Fair –Clean Energy Booth • Kurt Jones, 719-539-6447, kurt.jones@colostate.edu
