Theories of the First Humans • Humans first developed about 2 million years ago in present day Africa. • Humans are unique: opposable thumbs, spoken language, extensive thought processes • Unlike other animals, humans are unusually aggressive toward their own kind (wars throughout all of history).
Paleolithic Era • 2 million years ago – 14, 000 B.C.E. • Paleolithic means “Old Stone Age” in Greek • Discovered the use of fire • Humans relied on hunting and gathering. • Small groups, relatively equal • Simple stone tools • Cave art
(Paleolithic Continued) • Polytheistic religion: many gods and spirits.
Neolithic Revolution • After the ice ages ended, larger animals died off. • Food shortages meant people had to find a new way to survive. • People gradually domesticated animals and discovered farming. • Life changes DRAMATICALLY. This was humanity’s first revolution.
Neolithic Way of Life • Began about 10,000 B.C.E., “New Stone Age” • Societies gradually adopt farming • Food surpluses = population grows. • People use stone tools. • Religion remains polytheistic • People stay in one place b/c of farms, villages grow.
Neolithic Problems • Diseases begin to spread • Farming is much harder work. • Society becomes more unequal. • Women lose many rights because men become primary providers of heavy labor. • Wars become common
