Potential Impacts • Additional courses may lower GPA • PSAs may try a “quick fix” through nontraditional programs to bridge the gap
Certification Overview • Transcript identification tips • Core-course considerations • Coursework taken before ninth grade • Course levels • Course title policies
Transcript Identification • Where? • What school or program • Transcript notations • Entry/Exit Dates, Headings, Course Designations • When? • Puzzle of academic time • Prior to 9th grade
Transcript Identification • What? • Numeric grading scale • College coursework • 2012-3 • How? • Online/virtual/credit recovery • Brick and mortar
Core-Course Considerations • Definition • Graduation credit in English, math, science, social studies, foreign language, comparative religion/philosophy • At/above the high school’s regular academic level • Academic, four-year college preparatory • Life of a core course • High school submits online • Staff makes initial decision (approve, deny or hold for more information) • For pending courses, high school submits information for review • Course description, course outline, course flow chart
Core-Course Considerations • Nontraditional Courses • Must meet all elements of a core course • Ongoing access/interaction with instructor for purposes of teaching, evaluating, providing assistance • Defined timeframe for completion • College Courses • Must meet all elements of a core course • Must be accepted by the high school for all students • Must be on the high school transcript • Proposal No. 2012-3
Coursework Completed Before 9th Grade • Appears on a high school transcript • Course title matches high school’s list of NCAA courses • Course is listed with a grade (letter or numeric) • Course is listed with high school credit

College Courses- Determination Of Core Content • Transcript review • Course title • Course number • College website • Course catalog/description • Duplicative review • High school review staff may be consulted • Credit awarded
Duplicative Course Issues • Courses appear on list but may be duplicates • Ex: Integrated Math 1 and Algebra 1 • Both are core, but are essentially the same course • Course with best grade would be used in certification • Courses that may be taken successive years • Ex: Debate I, Debate II, Debate III • Best grade would be used for maximum one credit • Sometimes appear on list as Debate I OR Debate II OR Debate III
On-Campus Strategies • Early transcript procurement/review • Ask questions about transcript designations, repeated courses, courses out of district, etc. • Repeated courses likely credit recovery • Ask PSA about additional coursework • PSA registration process captures additional coursework IF the PSA completes it • Helpful to certification process • Use resources on high school portal

High School Review • Schools with no list • Proactive review based on IRL activation • Questionnaire and request for documents • Possible decisions • School cleared • School withdrawn • Voluntary • No response • School placed in extended evaluation • Usually two certification cycles • Review of documents during that timeframe • School not cleared • Courses/grades/graduation cannot be used
