What is Skin Cancer? • Most common of all cancers • More than 1 million cases in US each year • 3 types: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, melanoma

Basal Cell Carcinoma • Most common • Appears on face & ears • Easiest to detect & treat • Does not usually metastasize (spread)
Squamous Cell Carcinoma • 2nd most common type • Appears on sun-exposed areas of the body • More dangerous—it can spread to areas beneath the skin
Melanoma • Least common—most lethal form of skin cancer • UV radiation from sun & tanning beds ↑ risk • Early diagnosis is key to stopping spread to other body parts • 70% melanomas begin in or near a mole or other dark spot on skin • Highest risk: fair skin, light blue/green eyes, blond/red hair • Anyone can develop skin cancer
ABCDE Warning Signs of Moles • Asymmetry—irregular in shape • Border—uneven or irregular • Color—different colors or changing shades • Diameter—anything larger than pencil eraser • Evolving—growing or changing in size, shape, or elevation
USE SPF!!! • SPF = Sun Protection Factor • Use SPF > 30 to reduce harmful effects of UVA & UVB rays • The SPF number allows a person to stay out in the sun that many times longer (i.e. 30 SPF = 30 times longer) • SLIP, SLOP, SLAP • SLIP on a shirt! • SLOP on sunscreen • SLAP on a hat!
