  2. Understanding Down Syndrome

  3. What is Down Syndrome? Genetic Condition Physical Characteristics Individuals with Down syndrome often have distinct physical features, including a flat facial profile, upward slanting eyes, and a smaller stature. Intellectual Disability Down syndrome is a genetic disorder caused by the presence of an extra copy of chromosome 21. This additional genetic material affects the development of the body and brain. Most people with Down syndrome have mild to moderate intellectual disability, but each person's abilities and challenges are unique.

  4. Types of Down Syndrome Trisomy 21 This is the most common form of Down syndrome, occurring when there are three copies of chromosome 21 in every cell. Translocation Down Syndrome In this type, part of chromosome 21 attaches to another chromosome, leading to extra genetic material. Mosaic Down Syndrome Individuals with mosaic Down syndrome have a mixture of cells, some with an extra copy of chromosome 21 and others with the typical two copies.

  5. Diagnosis of Down Syndrome

  6. Prenatal Screening Diagnostic Tests Genetic Counseling Screening Tests NIPT Test can assess the risk of Down syndrome by analyzing cell-free DNA in the mother's blood. If a screening indicates a higher risk, diagnostic tests such as amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling can provide a definitive diagnosis. Expectant parents are encouraged to seek genetic counseling to understand the implications of a positive diagnosis and make informed decisions.

  7. Treatment for Down Syndrome

  8. Medical Management Cardiac Care Thyroid Monitoring Respiratory Support Respiratory issues, such as sleep apnea, may necessitate interventions like continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy. Many individuals with Down syndrome require specialized cardiac evaluations and potential surgical interventions to address congenital heart defects. Regular monitoring and management of thyroid function are essential due to the increased prevalence of thyroid disorders.

  9. If you want to know more about this test, then it is better to contact the nearest healthcare Centre.
