Computer Managed Learning CML in PracticeMonday Seminar Rob Lloyd-Owen School of Computing & Mathematics CML in Practice - Rob Lloyd-Owen
Agenda • Our drivers for CML • PTS - Integrated Learning System SW Intro • Project Phases 1: <Jan 2000 2: then till now and 3: What next? • Brief review Phase 1 & Phase 2 • Managing What? What learning ? Report • Experiences of stakeholders: Learners: Staff & Students[Internal & External] • What are we to do? How can we do it?
Our Drivers for CML • Rate of Software version changes • Materials development, overhead & quality • Student ability - diversity & range • Training versus education • Need for diagnostic & self paced learning • Motivation, feedback and control • Attendance at practicals, monitoring stages • Reduce costs, student contact + > Quality
Introduction to PT - ILS System • CustomDoc - create learning materials - tasks • Learning Central Admin to Manage • users, activities & groups of users & activities • create CBT, • Learning Central User • Run CBT, • OnDemand • Reports • GO to other HE presentation
Project Phase 1 - Aug 1999 Jan 2000 • Aug 99 Evaluation and preliminary training • Aug 99 Lease 3 years on 1 year option • Target Courses CFx103 across schools • Sep - Oct 99 attempt campus network install in CW • Oct 99 Decision by tutors to abandon CBT and run with Notes on J:\drive and tasks • Dec 99 now in CW, CS, FS, Z & Ramsden
Project Phase 2 Jan 2000 to now • Jan 2000 pre term tested logon • Target modules CHX103, CHI242, CFB204 • ESF SME C&IT Training Courses ***** • Problems with network delay - single server • NT Client /Server - Client heavy software • Pre and post assessment questions random • CBT - MS Office Products • Major problem speed of response
USING PTS - Issues raised • Staff and student preferences • Instruction versus education • Skills and learning transfer • Resourcing both human and technical • Issues not new • Benefits and potential solutions offered by CML are they "real"?
More information & debate • ILT http://www.ilt.ac.uk • CAA Centre http://caacentre.ac.uk/ • CAA/CAL hybrids: http://caacentre.ac.uk/onlres7.shtml
Where are we now? • Staff experiences - mixed • Student Experiences - mixed • Both staff and students biased against system because of the network problems • Network not geared to networked CML • Under resourced • Evaluating options • Reports of who has used the CBT & Tests
What are we to do? • Cease lease - go back to paper handbooks, CustomDoc huge success with SMEs • Adopt the new web based version Knowledge Pathways • Create Self Teach CBT material on CD ROM - Use CBT Online for Pre & Post Test • Look at using the Software as part of the assessment strategy • Tutorials / practicals drop in assessment ???
How can we do it? • Training & debate • Resources, resources, resources • Human resource • Staff academic and technical • Technical Resource • More versions on more servers • Administration Resource - links to CAMS • Persistence & PRACTICE
Summary & Debate? • How experienced are we at using CML? • Problems of varying staff & student experience and abilities • Problems over training and education which comes first [Concrete vs Abstract thinking] • No agreed standards of performance/ability ECDL, EdExcel, BCS, NCC, NTO etc • The problem is not going to go away! • Help!!!!
