Vocabulary • Mastitis -- inflammation of the mammary gland usually caused by microorganisms and bacteria • Clinical Mastitis --visible signs of mastitis • Somatic Cell Count– The # of white blood cells in milk. Indication of infection. • Subclinical Mastitis -- no visible signs of the disease: • Somatic cell count (SCC) of the milk will be elevated. • Causes the greatest financial loss to dairy farmers through lowered milk production.
What Causes Mastitis? About 95% of all infections are caused by • BACTERIA • Streptococcus agalactiae • Staphylococcus aureus, • Escherichia coli. The other 5% are caused by other ORGANISMS. • For example: • Dirty milking parlors and equipment • Corrals and stalls that aren’t clean and bedded. • Injury to udder or teats
What are the symptoms of Clinical Mastitis? • Flakes or clots in milk • Color changes in milk • Quarter of udder is swollen or tender • Decreased milk production
How is Mastitis diagnosed? • California Mastitis Test (CMT) • Strip cup • Somatic Cell Count test performed in laboratory
What can be done to prevent Mastitis? • Wash udder thoroughly before milking • Dip teats with antibacterial solution • Clean milking equipment • Separate infected animals • Give animals clean and dry bedding
Why is it important to diagnose subclinical mastitis? There are no symptoms It’s DECREASING milk production!
How to Perform the California Mastitis Test 1- Clean each teat with alcohol 2- Squirt a small amount of milk from each quarter into appropriate well 3- ½ Teaspoon is sufficient 4- Mix an equal amount of reagent with the milk
Read the Results How to Read the Results: The CMT reagent reacts with the white blood cells and the mixture thickens or gels in proportion to the amount of infection present.
