  1. Gems Traded By: Rachel Jolls, Courtney Ferrell, Megan Williams, Julia Baranov

  2. My name is Mowgli, and this is a story about my travels. In this particular story, I am trading some of the most precious commodities, also known as gems. I set off from India, where gems are often the prized possession.

  3. I traveled on Baloo, a one humped, saddled camel, along the silk road to China. While on this journey, I met a very religious and determined man. Turns out he practices Confucianism, and he preaches at the entrepots.

  4. This man failed to tell me his name, but he talked about Confucianism and all its values. The one thing that stuck out to me the most was the sense of humanity, kindness, and courtesy that all followers must practice. When I finally arrived in China, no merchants were willing to trade with us because gems were not as important as in India. So Baloo and I were very disappointed.

  5. After China, I left Baloo and traveled on the sea route in a ship called junk to Kilwa located in Africa.

  6. I have to say that if it wasn't for the monsoons, and magnetic compass, I got while I was in China, I would have never found my way.

  7. Once in Kilwa, I met a merchant named Kaa. He told me about the buildings carved out of stone, and how many women enjoyed much more influence in public affairs than any other society.

  8. While I was talking to Kaa, I decided to trade my gems for one of his bigger gems. He tried to tell me that my gems were not worth as much as his, but I was not fooled...

  9. I threatened to walk away, and not come back. This caused much apprehension for Kaa. So in the end I wound up getting the bigger gem. YAY!

  10. After leaving Africa with my new gem, I met up once again with Baloo and headed on the silk road to Arabia.

  11. While traveling to Arabia I heard a rumor about Damascus and its importance as a trading center. I decided to check it out. I can honestly say that I was not disappointed by Damascus.

  12. While in Damascus, I met a very kind merchant who gladly turned my gem into a big, beautiful ring. I then exchanged gold, for the ring.

  13. With Baloo by my side I headed to Anatolia, but only to be distracted by Trabzon, another major city on the silk road.

  14. In Trabzon, I had a nice, little chat with a Mongol. He told me about how Europe was on its way to becoming a very powerful society. I cannot say that I believed this man, for I had never heard of a Europe. But this certainly was something to consider… I ended up taking this Mongols advice and headed to Europe, really not knowing what to expect.

  15. Once again I left Baloo, and traveled on the sea route, but this time I used a ship called a dhow.

  16. When I arrived in Italy, I was speechless. I don't know if I would have gone as far as to say Europe would become a great power, like the Mongol did though. I ended up trading my ring for leather and olive oil, which I figured my wife would enjoy.

  17. So I headed back to India. Knowing that my mission was done for now...
