  4. Dwight D. Eisenhower • “I LIKE IKE” • He Sponsored and Signed the Federal Aid Highway Act of 1956. This gave birth to America's interstate highway system. Eisenhower worked hard to get the bill passed and it was his favorite piece of legislation.

  11. 1968 Democratic Primary • Johnson chooses not to run for the nomination • Hubert Humprey (Johnson’s VP) runs • Robert Kennedy enters the race and is assassinated just after winning the California primary June 5th, 1968.

  21. SALT I • Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty • 5 year agreement that held the number of ICBMs (intercontinental ballistic missiles) & SLBMs (submarine launched ballistic missiles) to 1972 levels. • Restricted the development of antiballistic missile defense systems.

War Powers Act Passed 1973 • 1973 Congress passes the War Powers Act to rein in the power of the president to make war. • President can send troops abroad but must inform Congress within 48 hours. • President needs Congressional approval to leave troops there for longer than 60 days. • It passes over Nixon’s veto.

  23. Watergate: Nixon’s downfall • The break-in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters during the 1972 presidential campaign starts the troubles for Nixon the lead to his resignation.

  26. Why Ford? • Well respected member of Congress for 25 years • Yale Law School graduate • Reputation for integrity and openness • According to Ford: "a moderate in domestic affairs, a conservative in fiscal affairs, and a dyed-in-the-wool internationalist in foreign affairs."

President Jimmy Carter • A former peanut farmer and governor from Georgia, Carter was committed to humanitarian efforts around the world. • Appealed to Americans as an “Out of the Beltway” politician who could be trusted. • Born again Christian • Pardoned draft dodgers • Encouraged Americans to turn down their thermostats to save energy. • OPEC pushed oil prices up causing double digit inflation

  33. Iran Hostage Crisis • Anti-American Muslim militants stormed the US embassy in Tehran and took 66 American hostages. Carter’s attempt at rescue fails. Released 444 days later on Reagan’s inauguration day.
