  1. Welcome to CHS Open House Spanish I Sra. Garza B 138 830-357-2707

  2. Course Objective Main objective is face to face communication about different topics. Focus is on confidence, accuracy, and fluency.

  3. How will we get there? • PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE • Resources: Textbook, online links- powerpoints, Quia (an online program I use for students to practice) • Textbook online ( as soon as we can get it going- company currently working on it) • Other resources: youtube- students can look up certain things for example- Spanish alphabet and they will find different videos available.

  4. What about testing? • We generally have 3 tests each nine weeks. • At least 2 of the tests are oral. That means that students have specific scripts they practice with a partner. • There will also be some projects incorporated into the testing. • There is at least one written test per 9 weeks. • Quizzes on vocabulary and other specific objectives.

  5. How do I know what objectives are being taught? • As we progress through the book, each chapter has the specific language and grammar objectives listed at the beginning of each chapter. • Each chapter is divided up into two sections of vocabulary which include the dialogs to be mastered and two sections of grammar. At the end of each chapter is a list of the vocabulary the students will be learning.

  6. What if my child fails a quiz or a test? • A Quiz will not be retaken if a student fails it, but a test can be retaken. The student will receive the highest of an 80 on a retake if they score more than an 80. They will not be awarded more than an 80 if the score is higher. If the student makes a lesser grade than the original grade, then the grade of the retake is recorded even if that grade is lesser than the original grade. • Students are to be prepared by studying their vocabulary at least 15-20 minutes daily. • Time is given in class for students to practice and prepare for the oral tests. If a student fails an oral test, it will be up to the teacher’s discretion as to whether the student will be allowed to redo the oral. This will depend on whether the student is maximizing time given in class for preparation.

  7. As a parent, how can I help my child with Spanish? • Encourage your child to study 15-20 min. a day in a quiet place without disruptions where they can practice and say the dialogs and vocabulary words out loud. • Encourage them to utilize the flashcards they made in class and to carry them so they can study at every opportunity. • Encourage them to go to the online text and point and click on the dialogs so they can hear and repeat them. • Encourage them to log on to Quia where I have posted activities specific to what we are learning. • Encourage them to watch Spanish TV and programs- be selective please • Encourage them to communicate with me if they are struggling and come to tutorials. • Encourage them to explore some of the links posted on the “anuncios” page.

  8. Con’t • Encourage them to practice with a buddy. • Encourage them to speak Spanish at every opportunity with Spanish speakers. • Have them read advertisement signs that use Spanish. • Look for Spanish being used in daily life, grocery store, other advertisements- these advertisements help build vocabulary. • Ask your child what phrases they learned in Spanish that day.

  9. How do I communicate with the teacher? • I am easier to reach by email. hope.garza@boerne-isd.net I am prompt in replying to your emails regarding any concerns you may have. If we need to, we can schedule a conference. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any concerns.

  10. There is lots of information on my web page. • I do my best to keep my webpage updated. • On the “anuncios” page there are many links you might want to explore. • There are links that have quizzes and tests the student can take for practice. • On my Quia link there will at times be quizzes the student needs to take for credit. • The Quia lets me see also how much time the student spends practicing.

  11. Thank you! • I am glad you viewed this short powerpoint. If you have any questions, you can email me or go to the syllabus for the information. • Again, thank you for all your support.
