What is the Day of the Dead? • The Day of the Dead is a Hispanic ritual/holiday to remember and welcome the dead back into our world from the gates of heaven. This holiday is celebrated by making altars, dolls ,food etc.
What are Calavera Cookies? • Calavera cookies are unique cookies with a wide variety of colors. These cookies are shaped in a skull like shape to remember the dead.
Ingredients for Calavera cookies • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar • 1 egg • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract • 1/2 teaspoon no-color almond extract • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour • 1 teaspoon baking powder • 1 teaspoon salt
Recipe • In a bowl, beat the butter in sugar until it becomes fluffy. Beat in the egg and extracts. Mix the flour, baking soda, and salt. Add the butter, one cup at a time. Divide the dough into two balls. Roll each ball into a diameter of 12 inches. Bake the cookies for 8-11 minutes until they turn light brown.
Facts about Calavera cookies. • Calavera cookies are a tasty treat for the holiday, Day of the Dead. These cookies represent the dead on there journey from the gates of heaven to the earth. They were brought to Italy in the 17th century and didn’t come to Mexico in the 18th century.
