King County Metro • Metro provides 100 million rides every year with 1,330 buses over a 2,134 square mile area. • Service is provided, and must be adapted, to urban, suburban and rural communities. • Metro also supports • the nation’s largest vanpool program (600 vans) • the nation’s largest carpool program • Flex-Ride car rental program • ACCESS paratransit services • In 2006, Metro saw 5% ridership growth
Transit Now • In November 2006, King County voters approved the Transit Now ballot measure. • Provides 1/10th of 1% sales tax. • Will support a 20% increase in service over the next ten years. • Includes a Bus Rapid Transit (RapidRide) component that will be implemented in five corridors. • Provides for local partnerships programs, and special emphasis on “developing areas.”
Transit Advisory Committee • Formed by the King County Council in 1999 • Reports to the Council’s Regional Transit Committee • 15 members • two-year terms • Meets monthly
Transit Advisory Committee The TAC’s mission is: • Advice to Metro staff, King County Council, King County Executive • Report regularly to the King County Council Regional Transit Committee • Develop an annual work plan in conjunction with the RTC • Provide representation to Metro regional planning efforts • Participate in community outreach efforts as requested by staff, the Council or the Executive
Major Accomplishments:2006 - 2007 Over the past year, TAC members: • Successfully advocated for increased bus shelter construction, so that a backlog of requests will be completed by 2010. • Supported the Transit Now initiative • Supported Metro’s marketing efforts • Successfully supported a partial bus wrap proposal that will bring in approximately $400,000 in additional revenues to Metro.
Major Accomplishments:2006 - 2007 • Participated on two local service implementation Sounding Boards and two RapidRide Advisory Panels. • Gave in-depth feedback into Metro’s Long-Range Policy Framework and Six Year Plan. • At the request of the King County Council, reviewed and commented upon Metro’s advertising policy. • At the request of the King County Council, reviewed and commented upon Metro’s 2008 budget proposal.
