Exploring Earth Science: An Introduction to the 4 Spheres

Discover the wonders of Earth Science through the study of geology, meteorology, oceanography, and astronomy. Learn about the four spheres - lithosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere - and their importance in understanding the Earth's composition and physical features. Expand your knowledge on topics such as weather, climate, tides, rocks, planets, and more.

  1. Earth Science What is it all about?

  2. Earth Science is… • Finish this thought: I think Earth Science is… • All of the following definitions are from www.dictionary.com

  3. Definition • Earth Science is: Any of several sciences, such as geology, oceanography, and meteorology, that study the origin, composition, and physical features of the Earth. • Add astronomy to that and you could also say, then, that Earth Science is a study of space, air, land and water.

  4. Astronomy • IS… the science that deals with the material universe beyond the earth's atmosphere • We will discuss things like… Revolution/Rotation, Seasons, Tides, Moon Phases, Eclipses, Planets, The Sun, Stars, Galaxies, The Universe

  5. Meteorology • IS… the science dealing with the atmosphere and its phenomena, including weather and climate • We will discuss things like… Daily Weather, Layers of the Atmosphere, Types of Heat Transfer, The Water Cycle, Clouds, Storms, Tides, Pollution, Energy, Climate and Global Warming

  6. Geology • IS… the science that deals with the dynamics and physical history of the earth, the rocks of which it is composed, and the physical, chemical, and biological changes that the earth has undergone or is undergoing • We will discuss things like… Layers of Earth, Minerals and Rocks, Types of Crust, Plate Tectonics, Erosion, Weathering and Deposition, Faults and Folds, Geological History and specific Geology of Virginia

  7. Hydrology • IS… the science dealing with the occurrence, circulation, distribution, and properties of the waters of the earth and its atmosphere • We will discuss things like… The Water Cycle, Rivers and Streams, Groundwater, Watersheds, The Chesapeake Bay and Specifics to Virginia

  8. Oceanography • IS… the branch of science dealing with the physical, chemical, geological, and biological features of the oceans and ocean basins • We will discuss things like… Waves, Tides, Salinity, Ocean Chemistry, Energy, Ocean Life

  9. Why is Earth Science Important? • Here are just a few reasons... • Watch NASA Earth Science at 2030: a Vision of the Future http://youtu.be/w_fLMtkCntY

  10. Create an Illustration of Earth Science • 1-Draw “Earth” • 2-Draw a circle around it, leaving space between your “Earth” and this line • 3-Label the 4 branches: Astronomy Meteorology Geology Oceanography

  11. The “Spheres” • Sphere -the place or environment within which a person or thing exists • Lithosphere - “litho-” means stone • Hydrosphere - “hydro-” means water • Atmosphere - “atmo-” means air • Biosphere - “bio-” means life

  12. See the “Spheres” • Where can the four spheres be seen in the desert? What things are found in each? • Visual of the four spheres Image courtesy Earth Science World Image Bank http://www.earthscienceworld.org/images and McDougall Littell website http://www.classzone.com/books/earth_science/terc/content/investigations/es0103/es0103page02.cfm?chapter_no=investigation
