  3. What kind of instruments do they use? The fiddle The Pipe and Drum Band The bagpipes Gaelic Song or “Mouth music”

  4. What kinds of Music do they play? • They have reels and jigs (as we heard in Irish Music) • They also have Airs or Love Songs about Scotland. • They also play military marches on the pipes and drums.

  5. Auld Lang Syne • May old acquaintance be forgot, • And never brought to mind. • May old acquaintance be forgot, • For the sake of Auld Lang Syne. • For auld langsyne my dear, • For auld langsyne, • We’ll drink a drop of stout my dear, • For the sake of auld syne.

  6. The pentatonic scale • This scale is made up of 5 notes. • It uses only the black notes on the keyboard. • It is used in a variety of styles of music from Japan to Thailand to Scotland.

  7. Your Scottish Music Compositions • Using the pentatonic scale you should create a melody. • Make sure you choose the right sounds on the keyboard: violin, accordion, bagpipes. • We will hear some examples at the end of the lesson.

  8. How to make your music sound Scottish • Use the Scotch Snap rhythm: • Add a drone part using the notes F# and C#. • Don’t play too high up on the keyboard.

  9. Your compositions • Today I will hear you perform and assess your work. • Your compositions must include: • A melody using only the black keys • The Scotch Snap Rhythm • Drones Rehearse your work ready to perform at the end of the lesson.
