  6. The automobile liberated people. • Travel, independence.

  7. Urban Sprawl • Cities spreading in all directions because people commute now! • By late 1920’s. 1 car per 5 people.

  8. The Airplane!

  9. The Airplane • U.S. Post Office begins. • Charles Lindbergh and Amelia Earhart. • Transatlantic.

  10. America’s standard of living soars! • America owns 40% of world’s wealth. • Annual income rose 35%. $522-$705.

  11. Electrical conveniences • Better power transmission. • Cities to suburbs. • Irons • Refrigerators • Cooking ranges. • Toaster

  12. Advertising! • “Say it with flowers!” • Listerine 1923. Mouthwash. People scared of bad breath.

  13. Superficial Prosperity.

  14. Producing too much! • Iron and railroad – not doing well. • Farms – machines = more food = lower prices.

  15. Installment Plan • Buy goods over an extensive period. • “Lay-away”

  16. Life seemed great… There was little warning of what was to come…
