stimulants • Stimulation speed up activity in brain and the brainstem. Examples Include • blood pressure, • heart rate • metabolism • Types of Stimulants • cocaine • crack (cocaine that is smoked) • amphetamines • caffeine
Stimulant: Cocaine • Cocaine- effects the neurotransmitter DOPAMINE • Binds to the Dopamine transporters on the axon(prevents re-uptake) • Dopamine builds up in synapse • Results= Strong feelings of euphoria
Re-UPTAKE of Dopamine After Cocaine • Once cocaine has left our system dopamine can be reabsorbed from its original home, the axon terminal from which it came. • However, when dopamine levels return to normal, dopamine receptors on the dendrite are reduced. • This reduction causes “Cravings” for cocaine because there is not enough dopamine receptors to fully activate the neuron • Craving- STRONG need for cocaine to raise the level of dopamine back up CRAVING
Brain Structures Affected by Cocaine 1. Frontal Cortex & Amygdala involved in memory. Limbic System 2. More specifically the amygdala has been linked to emotions and memory. 3. Cocaine cravings maybe be linked to these brain areas when stimulated by environmental cues and memories.
