  1. Money Problems Dr Fog Presents Year 1 (National Numeracy Strategy) (Based on DFEE Sample Lessons)

  2. Resources • 0 – 20 Number tiles or cards (or as many as there are children in the class). • 1p and 2p coins • Containers for the coins. • Items from the class shop. • Dice showing ‘1p, 1p, 2p, 2p, 3p, 3p • 100 - grid

  3. Mental Learning Objective • I can say numbers 0 to 20 in order. • I understand simple properties of numbers.

  4. Mental Learning Task • Give each child a number tile. • The task for the class is to read out their numbers in order.

  16. Main Learning Task • Today we are going to be working with money.

  17. Main Learning Task • Do you know the names of any coins? • Your teacher will show you some of each coin. • What are the differences between the coins?

  18. Main Learning Task • Your teacher will choose 10 children with 1p to sit in a line holding their coins. • How much money have you got altogether? • Check your answer.

  19. Main Learning Task • Now ask ten children holding 2p coins coins to stand up. • Count how much there is altogether. • Easy if you count in twos.

  20. Main Learning Task • If you have not shown your coin, stand up. • How much as this group altogether? • How could we do this?

  21. Main Learning Task • Everyone with a 1p stand in a line. • Everyone with 2p coins to stand in another line. • Count the 2p line first. • Now count on using the 1p line.

  22. Main Learning Task • We are now going to work on a shopping activity using coins and items from the class shop. • Put a pot of twenty 1p and 2p on each table.

  23. 5p Main Learning Task • Here is a biscuit – how will you pay for it?

  24. Coke Main Learning Task • Here is a drink of coke costing 8p. How will you pay for it?

  26. Main Learning Task • You will now buy items from the classroom shop.

  27. Main Learning Task • Challenge:- • Give a group of children 1p and 2p coins and a dice marked ‘1p, 1p, 2p, 2p, 3p, 3p’. • Each child starts with 10p • Roll the dice and give that amount of money to the person on their left. • After three goes, who has the most?
