10.10 Warm-Up A group of friends were looking up at a rain cloud. Each had a different idea about how rain falls from the clouds. This is what they said: • Jaylen: I think rain falls when clouds are melt. • Eli: I think rain falls when the clouds open up. • Emma: I think rain falls when the clouds get too cold. • Katie: I think rain falls when clouds are shaken or pushed together. • Miles: I think rain falls when water drops in the clouds get too heavy. • William: I think rain falls when the evaporated water in the clouds condenses. • Emmanuel: I think the rain falls as the ice crystals in the clouds begin to melt. • Nathaniel: I think the rain falls when the water falls through little holes in the clouds. Who do you agree with and why? Write your claim and evidence.
What we already know...... • At this point we should have heard of the water cycle. Here is a chance to show what you know........ http://apps.southeastwater.com.au/games/education_kidsroom_wcactivity.asp
evaporation - _________________________________________________ • Condensation-________________________________________________ • precipitation -_________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________ • infiltration – __________________________________________________ • water table – _________________________________________________ • lake – _______________________________________________________ • river – _______________________________________________________ • ocean– ______________________________________________________ • groundwater– ________________________________________________ • runoff – _____________________________________________________ • transpiration – ________________________________________________
evaporation - the changing of liquid to water vapor • condensation- the changing of water vapor to a liquid • precipitation - forms of water vapor that are heavy enough to fall to the Earth's surface such as rain, snow, sleet, hail, and fog • infiltration - the process by which water seeps into the soil • water table - the level below which the ground is saturated with water • lake - a body of water larger than a pond and too deep in parts for rooted plants to live • river - a natural stream of water larger than a creek and emptying into an ocean, lake, or another river • ocean- the bodies of salt water that cover nearly three fourths of the surface of the earth • groundwater- water found below the surface of the Earth • runoff - water that flows on the surface or through the ground into streams, rivers, lakes and oceans • transpiration - the evaporation of water from the leaves of plants
THE WATER CYCLE (Hydrologic Cycle)
TODAY’S OBJECTIVE • I can explain that solar energy (sun) is the driving force of the water cycle. • I can describe and label all stages of the water cycle (Evaporation, condensation, precipitation, transpiration, runoff, infiltration) • I can describe phase changes of H20 that may occur in each stage of the water cycle.
THE WATER CYCLE • Water Cycle: The change of water from one state to another and its movement from one place to another on Earth. • Driven by the sun’s energy Study Jams: Water Cycle
THE WATER CYCLE 1 • The main source of water=oceans. Every day, trillions of liters of water evaporate from the ocean
THE WATER CYCLE 2 • Water also evaporates rivers, lakes, and other sources on land. Plants give off water vapor as well (transpiration)
Evaporation • Evaporation is the process by which a liquid changes into water vapor (gas) through heating
Transpiration Transpiration is the release of water vapor into the air (evaporating) from a plant’s leaves
Condensation Condensation is the change of state from water vapor to liquid, through cooling.
Clouds Clouds occur when water vapor condenses into tiny water droplets in the atmosphere
THE WATER CYCLE 4 • Water from clouds fall back to earth’s surface as precipitation.
Precipitation Precipitation is any type of water that reaches the Earth (rain, snow, sleet, hail)
THE WATER CYCLE 5 When water reaches the ground, three things happen to it: • Runoff • Groundwater/Infiltration • Evaporation
Run-off/Accumulation 1. Water runs down hills over surface (runoff) and collects in oceans, rivers, lakes, streams (accumulation)
Infiltration Water is soaked into the soil or ground (groundwater).
3. Evaporation 3. Water evaporates back into the air
