  4. GOT LUNCH—MATH INTERVENTION Utilizing ALL of the school day How do we reduce failure rate and find time in school day for RTI? Lunch RTI for Math Math Teachers refer students who have zeroes, have been absent, or need extra help Student eats lunch in the RTI room while he or she gets extra assistance on Math concepts How do we find the staff for Lunch RTI? We utilize an Americorps staff member, an instructional aide and a Math Coach to assist with the organization and staffing of the lunch RTI time. We also use LINK CREW members

  5. PERSISTENCE PAYS OFF If it is important for your students, you can find a way. Obstacles first encountered 4 years ago: Lunch room manager says it can’t be done Students say food is too cold Students say milk is too hot Cooks don’t like it Students say it cuts into my social time during lunch Parents may complain Solutions to obstacles: Support of our superintendent Support of principals Use a rolling cart to deliver lunches to the RTI room Small refrigerator and microwave were donated Teacher buy in Teachers explain to students that this is a way to help them be successful Students can exit Lunch RTI when work is finished

ORGANIZATION IS THE KEY • Teacher referral forms • Student forms are given to students • Track lunch numbers for lunchroom • Teacher leaves work in the RTI room for student • RTI staff places complete work in student folder and returns it to the teacher • Communication with lunchroom about number of lunches each day • Calculators, pencils, textbooks, school supplies and a few computers are in the RTI room ready for students each day • We call lunchroom by radio to retrieve students who “forget” to go to lunch RTI • Assistant Principals help Lunch RTI staff with students who do not show up

SUCCESS STORY • Expanded to Science Department • Teacher volunteers to facilitate lunch RTI twice a week on planning period • Special education teachers have started a lunch RTI program with the help of their instructional aides • English and Social Studies departments have begun a lunch RTI program with the help of the LINK CREW • Several students ask to be placed into lunch RTI for extra help • Very few parent complaints or AWOLS from the lunch RTI programs
