Bioengineering education at BUTE: Before and after Bologna process AndrásSalgó Head of Department Applied Biotechnology and Food Science
BUTE = BME • Biggest institute of Hungarian higher education in engineering • Eight faculties, 75 depts or institutes • 18 000 students, 2500 staff • Research university with strong scientific and industrial activities
Bioengineering education • Planned, structured and organized by Faculty of Chemical Engineering • Founded 1974 • First release of bioengineers in 1979 • Interdisciplinar and inter-university approach
The complicated „Bio World” Different possible approaches
What is „Bioengineering” or Biochemical Engineering ? Strong view, contemplation and knowledge in chemistry and related area. Interdisciplinarity The three different area are equally important Chemistry Biology Engineering
How bioengineering education started ? • Early 70ties planned, structured and organized • Founded 1974 • Curriculum of chemical and bioengineering education was fitted
Subbranches • Industrial Biotechnology • Clinical Chemistry and Healthcare • Food Quality Control • Agricultural and Food Technology • Environmental Protection 10 semester, lab-practice is min. 35 % Interuniversity – University of Natural Sciences ELTE - University of Medicine SOTE
Typical subjects offered by cooperating universities Genetics, Microbial genetics Immunology, Cell biology, Clinical Chemistry, Botanical Bases Human physiology, Zoological Bases Pathophysiology Ecology Pharmacology Practical methodology in human trials
Early results • First release of bioengineers in 1979 • 60-70 bioengineers graduated/year • All graduated student found job • 1993 Introduction the ECTS system • Increasing mobility of students • 10 semester system, only some fine tuning in curriculum
Bologna process 2003- • Engineering education at BSc level 7 semester=210 credit (Hungarian stnd) • Bioengineering BSc established 2004 only one in Hungary • Bioengineering BSc started 2005/autumn • Basic studies 160 credits • Differentiated branch subjects 50 credits • 4 branches: Applied Biotechnology, Clinical Chemistry and Healthcare, Food Quality Control, Environmental Protection bioengineers

Recent experiences (5th semester) • Decreased ability and knowledge in chemistry • Sligth reduction in general knowledge • Strong segregation in students population • The practical capability decrease • More self-managed, independent work needed • No real approach about the possible employments of students having BSc • MSc outlook
Next step is MSC • Established 2006 • Bioengineering MSc will start in Spring 2009 • Starting process requested at Hungarian Accrediatation Committee. • 30-35% of BSc students can be involved • Qualification exam for students outside • Structure is similar to BSc – 4 subbranches

Follow-up statistics 200420032002
Conclusions Linear education system developed (BSc-MSc-PhD) Stronger selection between students and unis Competition for student and also between universities will increase The „demands” of industry has to be monitored continuously Continuous development of curriculum and subjects needed (the „bioarea” change very fast)
