  3. What does blood do? • Blood caries nutrients and chemicals called hormones to every cell in the body. • Blood drops off oxygento every cell in your body. • Blood carries waste gas (carbon dioxide) away from your cells. Created by Nicole Muzard, August 2009

  4. When you are sitting still, about how many beats (or squeezes) of the heart per minute? • 70-100 times at rest • More when you are active Created by Nicole Muzard, August 2009

  5. Blood flow Created by Nicole Muzard, August 2009

  6. Blood vessels • Fun fact: • If you laid out your blood vessels of your body in a straight line, it would be more than 60,000 miles long for a child and 100,000 miles long for an adult. Created by Nicole Muzard, August 2009

  7. Three types of blood vessels • Arteries: Pumps away from heart to the body • Contains oxygen • First aid Created by Nicole Muzard, August 2009

  8. Three types of blood vessels • Veins: Carry blood back to heart and then to the lungs to be cleaned out • Contain carbon dioxide Created by Nicole Muzard, August 2009

  9. Three types of blood vessels • Capillaries: Tiniest blood vessels. They bring blood to every cell in the body. O2 and CO2 are exchanged Created by Nicole Muzard, August 2009

  10. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CjNKbL_-cwA The function of capillaries artery arteriole capillaries vein venule Created by Nicole Muzard, August 2009

  11. Four components of blood • Plasma: A pale yellow liquid that carries food and hormones for your body’s cells. • It is half the volume of our blood. Created by Nicole Muzard, August 2009

  12. Four components of blood • Platelets: • They gather around a cut and weave thin, sticky threads over it. • After a minute or two, the threads cover the cut so no more blood can get out. • We call this clotting. • The scab you get is just dried up blood. Created by Nicole Muzard, August 2009

  13. Four components of blood • Red blood cells: • These cells carry oxygen to all cells of the body. Then they pick up the waste gas, carbon dioxide, and carry it away. Created by Nicole Muzard, August 2009

  14. Four components of blood • White blood cells: • They attack germs that get in our body every day. • If we do get sick, the germs multiplied before the WBC could stop them. Created by Nicole Muzard, August 2009
