Reasons for American Imperialism • Imperialism • The policy in which stronger nations extend economic, political or military control over weaker territories • Factors for American Imperialism • Desire for military strength • Admiral Mahan wanted America to be Naval power • Battleships Maine and Oregon were built • Thirst for new market • Technology helped produce surplus agricultural and industrial products that needed market to be sold. • Belief in the Superiority of Anglo-Saxon Culture
U.S Acquisition of Alaska & Hawaii • William Seward purchased Alaska from Russia in 1867 for $7.2 million • Critiques called it “Seward’s Icebox” / “Seward’s Folly” • 1800s – Americans have established sugar plantations in Hawaii. • Hawaiian Natives were outnumbered by laborers brought by planters • 1875-1890 U.S. IMPORTED Hawaiian sugar duty-free • 1890 McKinley Tariff caused planters to demand U.S. annexation.
1887: U.S. navy had a base at Pearl Harbor • Liliuokalani became queen in 1891 • Planters made revolt against her and took over the island • Sanford Dole became temporary president • 1898 William McKinley annexed Hawaii.
American Interest in Cuba & Trouble with Spain • What Happened When Cuba Rebelled against Spain? • 1868-1878: Cubans fought first war of Independence • They failed but was able to get slavery abolished in 1886 • U.S. invested in Cuban Sugar Industry • Cuban Economy collapsed when U.S. tariff was imposed in 1894 on Cuban Sugar by U.S. • Jose Marti started a second war of Independence in 1895 • American Public Opinion got divided on whether to support Cubans or not.

War With Spain • April 20 1898 war started with Spain in the Philippines • Spain Surrendered on July 25. • Treaty of Paris ended the war • Cuba became independent • U.S. Acquired Puerto Rico & Guam • U.S. Paid $20 Million to Spain for Philippines • Many Americans opposed the imperialism as it violated the spirit of the constitution.
