  3. Where we left off: • Moses wandered in the desert for forty years. • Moses gets mad and does something on his own that the Lord did not instruct him to do • Moses not allowed to enter the promise land, but is allowed to see it • Joshua leads Israel back into the promise land

  4. After the Exodus

Back in Canaan • Other groups are now living in the land: Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, Jebusites, Canaanites • Joshua begins fighting with these other societies • Israel ruled by judges after the death of Joshua 1380 BCE – 1050 BCE • Around 1200 BCE Israel controls Canaan again • Israel asks for a king (1 Samuel 8:19-22)

Saul was too scared to face Goliath • A man named Jesse, of the tribe of Judah, sent his three oldest sons to fight alongside Saul • Jesse sends his youngest son, David, to the battle field with food for his brothers • David sees a Philistine mocking Israel’s army and is outraged. He goes to speak to King Saul 1 Samuel 17:32 - 51

  9. Saul Gets Jealous Saul makes two attempts to try to kill David David has two opportunities to kill Saul David is crowned the King of Judah and then Israel He attacks the Jebusites and takes over Jerusalem

  10. David David united the two kingdoms of Judah and Israel into one nation David was both king and chief priest He made Jerusalem their capital city and brought the ark of the covenant to Jerusalem making it the “holy city”

  11. Solomon David wanted to build a temple dedicated to God, but was told that it would be his son that builds this great temple. Solomon (David’s son) received very specific instructions from the Lord on how to build this temple. Nothing like this had ever been built before

  14. Why didn’t Jerusalem get taken?

  15. The Kingdom of Israel After being protected from the Assyrians, the people of Israel got complacent. They no longer followed the laws given to Moses. They lived however they wanted and even followed foreign gods

The rest of Israel’s history • 586 BCE Captured by Neo-Babylon • 539 BCE Persians took over Neo-Babylon and released Jews • Next 400 years, Jews ruled by Persians and then the Greeks • 168 -164 BCE Jews fight Greeks and get them out of Canaan • Ruled themselves until 63 BCE when they are conquered by the Romans
