5. Do you know someone who has fought in a war? Ask the pupils to put their hands up and tell you if they know someone who has fought in a war, this could be past or present wars. Remind them that they may have had great-grandparents or even great-great grandparents that were alive during the first and second world wars. Does anybody know anybody who is currently serving? Explain to pupils that children havent always been having a school meal at lunchtime and it wasnt until during the Second World War in the 1940s that the Government made all Local Authorities supply school meals at lunchtime. Then run through the bullet points which explains more about school meals and food during this time.

Read out the recipe for making Ox Heart - Method, Wash hearts thoroughly in warm water. Trim off fat, remove values and blood vessels. Rinse again. Fill with stuffing (if you have any bread or herbs). Place hearts in greased roasting tins. Pour over a little fat and bake for approx 1 hour. Add stock cover and braise in a slow oven until tender. Slice cooked hearts across the grain. Variation, Cut the hearts into slices after the first hour replace into tin , if you have any onions slice them thinly and lay on top, braise for 30 minutes and then add layer sliced potato on top, continue to braise until hearts and potatoes are cooked.
