  1. Malaria Vaccine Candidate Yields Disappointing Results Presented by: Dan DeLaney

  2. What is Malaria • Malaria is a parasitic disease • Sporozoites are injected to humans through a mosquito bite or from mother to child • These parasites mature in the liver and release merozoites which carry out the infection in the blood stream attack red blood cells • Mostly present in warmer climates

  3. Malaria Cont. • Incubation time of 10 days to 4 weeks before symptoms are noticed • Different types of malaria (falciparum malaria) • Symptoms: flu like symptoms, anemia, jaundice, muscle pain, bloody stools • With complications can lead to internal bleeding and failure of organs

  4. Vaccine and Trials • RTS, S or Mosquirix • Contains a protein that is found on the parasites surface • Injected 3 shots of this vaccine in babies that were younger than 12 weeks old

  5. Results • The injections showed that there was a 31% rate of protection against detectable malaria and a 37% rate of protection against severe malaria • Scientist want to continue research and believe that even using a marginally effective vaccine would be worth it • Bill Gates Funds the project and the trials are set to run until 2014
