History of Korea • Japanese held control over Korea since 1910 • USA and USSR agreed to split nation after WWII • Split at 38th Parallel • North: Communist • led by Kim Il-Sung • Called the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) • South: U.S supported government • Led by Syngman Rhee • Called the Republic of Korea
Unification • Both US/USSR wanted to unify Korea • USA had started to remove troops • Kim Il-sung pushed for Stalin to agree to an invasion of the South • U.S statements seemed to defer to USSR • Jun 25, 1950: North Korea invaded South Korea
U.S and U.N Response • 15 nation agreed to send troops • Led by American general, Douglas MacArthur
Who started the Korean War? • Neither the US or the USSR seemed to care about Korea
