  1. Warm-Up (Independently) How did the Iron Curtain speech show a brewing fight between the Soviets and the West? What was the Berlin Blockade/Airlift? Who won that conflict? How do you know? Identify 3 events that happened in 1949 which caused Cold War tensions to rise.

  2. The Global Spread of the Cold War • Through 1949 the Cold War was in Europe • First limited, conventional war fought in Asia • Korean War 1950-3

History of Korea • Japanese held control over Korea since 1910 • USA and USSR agreed to split nation after WWII • Split at 38th Parallel • North: Communist • led by Kim Il-Sung • Called the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) • South: U.S supported government • Led by Syngman Rhee • Called the Republic of Korea

  4. Unification • Both US/USSR wanted to unify Korea • USA had started to remove troops • Kim Il-sung pushed for Stalin to agree to an invasion of the South • U.S statements seemed to defer to USSR • Jun 25, 1950: North Korea invaded South Korea

  5. U.S and U.N Response • 15 nation agreed to send troops • Led by American general, Douglas MacArthur

  6. Who started the Korean War? • Neither the US or the USSR seemed to care about Korea

  7. Course of the War • Most of S. Korea taken over—except Pusan • US launched seaborne attack at Inchon • US success pushed the North Koreans back • Truman ordered MacArthur to invade N. Korea • Went beyond “containment” • US was approaching Chinese border

  8. Chinese Conflict • China got involved in war (1951) • Mao had “unlimited” volunteers • MacArthur suggested using nuclear weapons

  9. Stalemate and Ending of the War • US/UN decided to invade North Korea again • 1953: Cease fire issued • USSR did not join in negotiations (neutrality) • Stalin died in 1953 • Power struggle for leadership • Eisenhower elected in US
