  1. July 08 Safety Meeting LtCol Larry Brockshus

  2. Overview • July Sentinel • Hydration • Fireworks Safety • Rental Car Mentality • Core Values

  3. Hydration • Old guide was 6-8 glasses of water per day • New research suggest you should drink more • Weight divided by 16 • 160 pound person / 16 = 10 glasses a day • 8-10 glasses of water per day decreases joint pain • 5 glasses per day was shown to decrease the risks of colon, bladder and breast cancer

  4. Hydration • Decrease in total body water of only 2% • drop in short term memory • trouble with basic math • difficulty focusing on the computer screen or the words on a printed page • Signs of dehydration • thirst • lethargy (sleepy), • elevated heart rate • low blood pressure, dizziness • headaches • fatigue

  5. Hydration • Dehydration also occurs by drinking coffee and sodas • Both contain caffeine • Caffeine is a diuretic, which causes the body to give off even more water • Coffee, tea, sodas and alcohol are not substitutes for water.

  6. Fireworks Safety • July 4th is one of the largest days for fireworks • Thousands of people are either injured or killed using fireworks • Know the laws that pertain to your geographic location

  7. Fireworks Safety • To help make the 4th safer for all: 1. Never give fireworks to small children. Always have an adult present. 2. Use only outdoors. 3. Always have a garden hose and a bucket of water handy. 4. Never make your own fireworks. 5. Light only one at a time. 6. Never relight a dud. Wait 15-20 minutes. Dispose of all fireworks or remains of fireworks by soaking in water. Hot metal wire from sparklers seriously burns many small children. 7. Never throw or point fireworks at others. 8. Never carry fireworks in your pocket. 9. Never shoot in metal or glass containers. 10. Always wear eye protection.

  8. Rental Car Mentality • Aircraft mishaps by CAP pilots • 72% of pilots that had only completed Level 1 • Only 6% for those who completed level 2-5 • WHY • Level on pilots were there for the cheap rates (a rental car mentality) • Level 2-5, had a concern for CAP resources

  9. Rental Car Mentality • Do the 72% of mishap pilots who only completed Level 1 embrace CAP Core Values • Do they even know what they are? • Integrity • Volunteer Service • Excellence • Respect

  10. How is our Wing doing? • Aircraft tail tie down hook damaged • Pilot either did not know they struck the runway • Or, the pilot choose not to report it • Personal injury at CAP event • Member hurt on Monday • Not reported until Friday • Which Core Values were not followed • Integrity • Volunteer Service • Excellence • Respect
