Express Rail LinkThe First Operational TETRA System for Rail in the World Dr. Aminuddin Adnan CEO Express Rail Link Sdn Bhd 18 May 2005 1st Malaysian TETRA Conference, 2005
Agenda • ERL Background Information • Why TETRA • ERL Radio System • Selection of Radio Solution • Proposed Radio Solution • Radio Dispatch Sub-system • Trainborne Radio Sub-system • Conclusion
ERL Background Information • ERL comprises of: • 57km above-ground rail • 1 Operation Control Center • 2 Terminal Train Stations and 3 Intermediate Train Stations • 1 Depot • 12 high speed passenger trains running at 160km/h
ERL Route KL Sentral • Stations 5 • Distance 57 km Bandar Tasik Selatan Multi-mediaSuper Corridor Cyberjaya Putrajaya Salak Tinggi Air Rail Complex KLIA
ERL Background Information • The consortium led by Malaysian railway operator, Express Rail Link Sdn. Bhd. (ERL SB) and the Transportation Systems Group of Siemens AG have won the contract (announced 1998) to construct a complete rapid transit link between Kuala Lumpur’s main train station and the new Kuala Lumpur International Airport. • Siemens supplied the telecommunication system including the radio system. • Motorola was selected as the sub-supplier to provide the TETRA integrated digital radio system.
Why TETRA • TETRA is selected as the radio technology for the following reasons: • Open Standards • Guaranteed minimum performance. • Provides evolutionary growth. • Sourcing from more than one vendor. • Competitive pricing. • Frequency Efficient. • Integrated voice and data. • Features that meet ERL’s requirements. • TETRA will safeguard ERL’s investment for the next 10 to 15 years. • The TETRA system is the first to be implemented in Malaysia. • The ERL TETRA system is the first operational TETRA system for Rail in the world. • Award in May 2000 • Operational in 19 April 2002
ERL Radio System • The TETRA radio system was equipped with the following functions: • Communications between Dispatchers and Train Drivers to be full-duplex individual calls. • Calling of Trains by their assigned Train Run Number (TRN). • Integrated voice and data call functionalities. • Customized Screen for Dispatch Operators. • Customized Radio Control Panel (RCP) for train drivers. • Other interface include: • PA System • The overall TETRA radio system was designed with high reliability and redundancy.
Selection of Radio Solution • As TETRA was relatively new in implementation, thus the selection process was thorough and complete. • The selection of TETRA radio solution for ERL was based on the following criteria, but not limited to: • Well proven and accepted TETRA platform. • Have experiences in rail related projects. • Able to provide complete end-to-end radio communications solution for rail applications. • Ability to demonstrate working system with emphasis on rail applications. • System release that can meet the project schedule. • Strong local presence and support. • A radio supplier that understand rail operations and applications.
Proposed Radio Solution • The TETRA solution is based on Motorola’s well proven and accepted Dimetra (TETRA-compliant) platform. • The scope of supply included: • Central Network Equipment at Master Site • 7 x Radio Base Stations • 380 – 400 MHz • 2 Base Radios per site • 5 x Customized GUI Dispatchers • 24 x Trainborne Mobile Radios • Mobile Radio, Train Control Interface, Radio Control Panel • 20 x Vehicle Mobile Radios • Standard Mobile Radio installation • 200 Portable Radio • Vehicular Adapter

Radio Dispatch Sub-system • The radio dispatch application was customized according to ERL’s operational requirements. • The development of application is based on Application Program Interfaces provided by the Motorola’s Dimetra system. • All required functionalities are performed from the customized GUI of the dispatch terminals. Key functions include: • Calling of trains by their assigned Train Run Number. • Full duplex private calls between Dispatcher and Train Drivers. • PA announcement to trains from Dispatcher at OCC. • Etc. • Samples of the GUI display are as follows.
Trainborne Radio Sub-system • The trainborne radio sub-system can be divided into the mobile radio, train control interface and the radio control panel. • The trainborne radio application was customized according to ERL’s operational requirements. The development of application was again based on Application Program Interfaces provided by the Motorola’s Dimetra system. • All required functionalities are performed from the radio control panel of the trainborne radio sub-system. Key functions will include: • Full duplex private calls between Train Drivers and Dispatcher. • Sending of data status, e.g. Request-To-Talk (RTT). • Integration to train PA system. • Samples of the trainborne control interface and radio control panel are as follow.
Trainborne Radio Sub-system Train Control Interface & Radio Control Panel
System • The radio system installed in the Driver’s Cab
Train Pilot • Train pilot using the radio to communicate with the Operations Control Centre
Air Rail Complex Operation Control Centre • TETRA communication tower for the OCC
Operations Control Centre • 24-hour operation ensuring safety of operations
Benefits • Consistent audio quality across the entire 57km of the KLIA line. • Coverage at and between stations. • Provision of reliable information about train operations, engine health and track maintenance. • Increased productivity through instant maintenance requests. • Improved customer service with notification of hindrances to passenger comfort and safety.
Conclusions • TETRA communication system has been implemented successfully • The signals are clear • The voice clarity is excellent
Conclusion • The Motorola TETRA radio system effectively meets all of ERL’s operational and functional expectations.
