Identification of Mitochondria in Plant Cells Frey Scientific Cellular World Module Unit 2 Activity 3 Kasi Bolden & Susan Rathwick
Helpful introduction to cells • http://www.cellsalive.com/cells/cell_model.htm • http://www.biologycorner.com/worksheets/cellsalive.html
Objective • Students will identify mitochondria and other plant cellular organelles
When to do this lab? • During the study of the cell • Once students have become familiar with the structure and function of cellular organelles, including mitochondria
1 Celery stalk 1 Cover slip Forceps Janus Green B vital stain 1 Microscope, compound light 1 Microscope slide Paper towels 1 Pipette, plastic Apron Gloves Safety goggles Materials
Procedure • Make a wet-mount with celery using 5% sucrose solution and view plant cell organelles under the microscope. • Add Janus B Green stain to enhance view of mitochondria.
Discussions prompted from observations • Function and or review of organelles • Reason for both chloroplast & mitochondria in a plant cell • Endosymbiotic theory
