SWBAT understand and analyze how epigrams are used in ITW (Into the Wild) • I will return your Catcher Tests. • We’ll go over our Regents results towards the end of next week…and then practice forevermore for that test. If you don’t like this, then start packing for Alaska now ;) • Do Now: Quiz for 10 Minutes

  3. Homework • Read Chapter 12 – 13 • Do Now…we’ll do a cross the room with the essential questions.

  4. ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS – Answer 2 questions in your row • What is the relationship between nature and American identity? • What does it mean to be a rebel? • What is the relationship between self and society? • What is success? • How do we construct identity through our actions, interests, values, and beliefs? (Are some people living a lie?) • To what extent is community essential to happiness?

  5. What is an epigram? • short poem or verse that seeks to ridicule a thought or event, usually with witticism or sarcasm. • However, the “epigrams” that appear in Into the Wild are not meant to ridicule, but rather reflect on the events about to happen in the chapter, or reveal something deeper about our main character. • They help set the tone of the chapter and contribute to the mood.

  6. Unpacking Epigram 1 and 2 • Chapter 1: Epigram: What do we find out? • Chapter 2: What literary devices are used? What impact do they have on what was revealed in chapter two? What is the tone? • Working with a partner. Answer these questions.

  7. Choose an epigram • Unpack an Epigram for us. (Choose one epigram that stands out to you and explain why.) • How does it help further the story, help us understand the character? What literary devices are used?

  10. Reading the Author’s Note • Why do you think so many people are impacted by the story? • Why do we know the “end” as we embark on the beginning of the story? • What are some questions you have based on chapters 1 - 10?
