Technology and Learner Autonomy – A Reflection Paper Vukile D. Mgijima
An Autonomous Learner • sets their own goals and • takes responsibility for their own learning, • takes/accepts the initiative to interact with others to gain more insight about their learning, and • regularly reflects and reviews their own progress. • the one to whom learning is seen as the result of his own self-initiated interaction with the world (Thanasoulas, 2000).
Teacher’s Role • Create and/or maintain a conducive learning environment in which learners can learn to be autonomous - make ‘the technology’ available/accessible. • Guide learners – re how to • Provide relevant material – eg tut. Ex/tst on WiSeUp • Intervene for further assistance • Check, & update regularly
Tech & Learner Autonomy • enhances learner motivation (Sullivan & Pratt, 1996). • allows learners to seek out extra educational resources on their own and at their own pace. • Ls - use online reference tools such as online dictionaries, grammar and style checkers, and concordances for corpus analysis.
faster learners are able to ‘learn’ ahead. • Learn to organise their time & use it economomically and advantageously. • Through tech, each learner is able to monitor their progress through immediate and individualized feedback on language practice exercises, chapter tests, and score reports(Chapelle & Jameson, 2008).
In a nutshell ed tech - such as the Internet and computer software - enhances learner motivation in that it performs functions similar to and, in some instances, even better than what many teachers do in class through textbooks; and • makes it easier for teachers to help learners become autonomous
