Characterization of Metallic Glasses Faculty: Ghatu Subhash Students: Hao Li and Hongwen Zhang • Background • Metallic glasses (amorphous metals) have high strength similar to ceramics and ductility similar to metals. They are increasingly used in recreational and military applications • Understanding their mechanical behavior is vital to better utilization of these materials Place Background Figure Here • Research Objective • To determine static and dynamic behavior using hopkinson pressure bar and nanoindentation • Identify the influence of compositional variations on mechanical behavior • Development of constitutive models for deformation and fracture • Identify the mechanism for shearband formation
Metallic Glasses • Result 1 • The primary deformation mechanism is the formation of localized shear bands • Shear bands are confined to the region surrounding the nanoindentations • Hardness and Young’s Modulus have been determined • Temperature effects are minimized during the nanoindentation tests • Result 2 • A strong compositional dependence of mechanical properties have been observed in Zr-Hf based metallic glasses
